We present a critical analysis of Newton da Costa’s C1 paraconsistent calculus. The strategy considers what we call semantic categories underlying a logic, from which we explore a broader notion of meaning for the logic than the one provided by formal semantics. Through the examination of the semantic categories associated in principle with this calculus, and the analysis of a rational reconstruction of a historical case of inconsistency, we argue that there is a certain inadequacy within the semantic structure of C1, understood in the more general framework of meaning; we also argue that there is an inadequacy between this general semantic structure and those semantic categories of scientific thought that it would be modeling. From all the above, we conclude a brief argument in favor of the idea that scientific contradictions should preferably be modeled (against, at least, some of the hegemonic proposals) as necessarily false formulae.
