Abstract
POMA, Alice and GRAVANTE, Tommaso. Emotions, collective identity and strategies in socio-environmental conflicts. Andamios [online]. 2018, vol.15, n.36, pp.287-309. ISSN 2594-1917. https://doi.org/10.29092/uacm.v15i36.611.
The aim of the paper is to offer an analysis of the role of emotions in Mexican environmental conflicts. Based on fieldwork in the state of Jalisco (Mexico), where we have carried out in-depth interviews with members of three self-organized collectives which are defending their territories, and following the sociological framework on emotions and protest, we will show the role of emotions 1) in a repressive context, 2) in the construction of collective identity, as well as 3) in the organizational and strategic choices. Our proposal aims to highlight the internal dynamics of environmental activism in Mexico through a sociological lens in which the emotional dimension of the protest matters.
