Abstract
CALDERON CISNEROS, Araceli and ESCOBAR COLMENARES, Sandra. “My Own Work”: Care Work and Agroecology among Women Farmers in Chiapas (Mexico). Revista Col. San Luis [online]. 2024, vol.14, n.25, e1583. Epub Oct 21, 2025. ISSN 2007-8846. https://doi.org/10.21696/rcsl142520241583.
The objective of this paper is a qualitative approach to the care work of some women farmers in Chiapas in relation to agroecological processes. The research is grounded in the context of invisibility of women in the agricultural sphere, where their work is not recognized, considered only complementary or not sufficiently valued. Based on in-depth interviews with fourteen women, we describe a long working day defined by care work around food (broadly understood to include production and marketing in addition to the daily preparation of food), which leaves little time for their own organization or for self-care activities. Nevertheless, the women give meaning to their work that vindicate their effort to family subsistence, their contribution to the care of nature and mother earth, and as a political statement for their rights and in favor of healthy food.
Keywords : feminist economy; rural women; food care; gender; unpaid work.
