This article approach the problem of water and society. Its objective is to analyze social participation in the field of community management of water resources in a rural community in Puebla mountain, Mexico. The ethnographic method was used, with the semi-structured interview tool with key actors. As results, it was found that collective work allows the population to access water, provide work for the maintenance of the water infrastructure, allocate economic resources to pay the water rate, carry out activities to protect the supply source and manage ceremonies for the continuity of the vital liquid. It is concluded that water management in the El Mirador town transcends the technical, administrative and financial aspects, towards symbolic and sustainability dimensions, reinforcing that water management understood as a common good favors water sustainability and its local governance.
