Abstract
SANTILLAN SALGADO, Gustavo. Lazy People and Virtues. Civil Participation in Ethical Issues from the Study of Vagrancy, 1828-1853. Revista Col. San Luis [online]. 2023, vol.13, n.24, 00023. Epub Jan 27, 2025. ISSN 2007-8846. https://doi.org/10.21696/rcsl132420231527.
The article explores the growing intervention of civilians, either as officials or individuals, in ethical issues, defined as the exclusive responsibility of the Catholic Church. Through the study of sources of the time and specialized investigations related to the problem of the slackers, it suggests that said participation is a noticeable variable throughout the 19th century beyond political borders. Likewise, without ignoring the relevance of the Reform movement, it suggests that secularization is observed first in some judicial and administrative processes with popular participation rather than in Juarist provisions. That is to say: some secularizing traits of the Mexican nation are not necessarily products of reformist legislation, but noticeable trends throughout the 19th century. Thus, the supposed contradiction between a legal coun-try built with a secular legal structure, and a real country founded on a supposed Catholic fanaticism, loses solidity in favor of slightly less epidermal and perhaps more sophisticated interpretations of the contrasting nineteenth-century dynamics.
Keywords : lazy; morality; centralism; State; secularization.
