Abstract

CRUZ, Gustavo Roberto. Freedom and commonality when the Wiphalas are raised in Jujuy, Argentina. Latinoamérica [online]. 2026, n.82, pp.181-207.  Epub Mar 23, 2026. ISSN 2448-6914.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cialc.24486914e.2026.82.57762.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this article is to analyze the concepts of “freedom” and “the common good” in two works by Indianist intellectuals. It is motivated by the indigenous uprising, together with other social sectors, against a constitutional reform in Jujuy (northwestern Argentina) in 2023. The Wiphalas are the symbol of this uprising, and freedom and the commons are being redefined by the “libertarian” government in Argentina. From the perspective of indigenous political thought, the article is organized into three sections: 1) The geopolitical relevance of the Indian-indigenous uprising in Jujuy, which took the name Tercer Malón de la Paz; 2) Freedom and its link to the land according to Quechua-Ymara Fausto Reinaga; 3) The commons as it relates to the problem of the nation-state and Indian peoples-nations according to Kolla Wayra González. It concludes that issues such as “Indian-indigenous nationalisms,” criticism of the mono-national Argentine state, and possible alternatives are relevant aspects.

Keywords : Freedom; Common; State; Nation; Indianism.
