Abstract

MELLANO, Julieta Paula. Social demands in the face of new accumulation dynamics: the defense of land and territory in the southern corridor. Latinoamérica [online]. 2026, n.82, pp.137-160.  Epub Mar 23, 2026. ISSN 2448-6914.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cialc.24486914e.2026.82.57757.

ABSTRACT: This article presents the results of research on the social demands of three experiences of organized struggle against capitalist dispossession in the Mexican region of the southern corridor. First, the continental characteristics of the accumulation by dispossession model are analyzed from the perspective of Latin American critical Marxism and social theories on neo-extractivism. Then, the consequences of that model in Mexico and the social demands that have emerged over the past thirty years are presented. Finally, the way in which the southern peoples defend their notion of territory against the new dynamics of accumulation is analyzed. A critical and contemporary view of the conflicts and resistances identified as part of a common cultural and political tradition is offered, examining their complexity and highlighting their contrasts and similarities in a particular context, which is essential for contemporary social studies.

Keywords : Territorial defense; Resistance; Dispossession; Latin America; Mexico; Suriano Corridor.
