Abstract

RODRIGUEZ MINOR, Rebeca  and  CAUICH GARCIA, José Rafael. The Truncated Industrialization of Latin America, 40 years later. Rethinking Fernando Fajnzylber. Latinoamérica [online]. 2026, n.82, pp.73-105.  Epub Mar 23, 2026. ISSN 2448-6914.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cialc.24486914e.2026.82.57750.

ABSTRACT: Fernando Fajnzylber, a classic Chilean economist, argued in his book The Truncated Industrialization of Latin America the comprehensive shortcomings that prevented Latin America from efficiently implementing the Import Substitution Industrialization (ISI) Model. Today, forty years later, regional economies continue to face serious structural problems in their development processes. This article revisits the author's argumentation, specifically regarding the reevaluation of selective protectionism, technological innovation, and the importance of State-Business coordination in regional processes. The objective is to reveal the current challenges of industrial and productive development in Latin America through a mixed comparative analysis that combines grounded theory with longitudinal statistics to highlight in the findings the harsh and contrasting reality of industrial processes between the Asian Tigers and Latin America, thus confirming the Theoretical validity of Fajnzylber in the current systemic dynamics.

Keywords : Fernando Fajnzylber; Industrialization; Latin America.
