Abstract

PASSO, Joana Célia  and  AVENDANO VILLAFUERTE, Elia. Racial inequalities in Mexico. The challenges of being Afro-Mexican. Latinoamérica [online]. 2025, n.81, pp.165-203.  Epub Oct 27, 2025. ISSN 2448-6914.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cialc.24486914e.2025.81.57827.

ABSTRACT: As a result of colonialism, Latin American society in the 21st century bears the marks of racialization and inequalities between blacks and indigenous people in relation to whites. This article analyzes the scenario of racial inequalities in Mexico, particularly against Afro-descendants due to the challenges that arise from the omission of their presence in the Mexican nation. Some elements underpin our study: the recent identity recognition of the black population in the country, structural racism, the few studies on Afro-Mexicans that prioritize the dimension of racial inequalities, among other factors. This is a qualitative study, in which documentary analysis played a central role. Racism must be tackled on an ongoing basis and this task falls to individuals, institutions and society as a whole.

Keywords : Afromexicans; Racial inequalities; Racism.
