Abstract

MORALES MELENDEZ, Víctor Hugo. The Association of Caribbean States: between the geopolitics of the Greater Caribbean and development cooperation. Latinoamérica [online]. 2025, n.81, pp.147-164.  Epub Oct 27, 2025. ISSN 2448-6914.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cialc.24486914e.2025.81.57826.

ABSTRACT: the objective of this article is to demonstrate that 30 years after its creation, the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) is a platform for integration, cooperation and action that needs to be revitalized to become an alternative, with the objectives and operational capacity to contribute effectively to the development of the Greater Caribbean. Documentary research, dialogue with direct stakeholders and analysis were the method that led to the hypothesis that the AEC is the product of a post-colonial vision of reaffirmation of the Caribbean island states for a better interrelation with their environment that will facilitate greater viability. The results indicate that, in a convulsed, changing and multipolar world, the Greater Caribbean requires greater cohesion for concerted action and cooperation that will enable it to advance towards sustainable development, given its fragility in the face of natural disasters, geopolitical pressures and weak connectivity.
