Abstract

TOVAR SOTO, Noé. The New Latin American Cinema in the sixties. A historical approach. Latinoamérica [online]. 2025, n.81, pp.113-146.  Epub Oct 27, 2025. ISSN 2448-6914.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cialc.24486914e.2025.81.57825.

ABSTRACT: the purpose of this article is to make a historical approach to the five cinematographic movements of our continent that gave theoretical and aesthetic sense to the New Latin American Cinema of the sixties: Chilean, Brazilian, Argentinean, Bolivian and Cuban. Its relevance lies in synthetically exposing the background of contemporary Latin American cinema, from the premise that considers cinema as an instrument that allows introducing the audience to the social, cultural and political context represented by each plot. To document this, in addition to the critical bibliography, some of the films of the time are described. The result shows the ideological and aesthetic similarities in the filmographies of Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia and Cuba, the main exponents of this cinematographic movement, as well as demonstrating that the common denominator of this film movement was the use of cinema as a tool for social denunciation.

Keywords : Latin American Cinema; Social denouncement; Political; Latin American.
