Abstract

ESCOBAR SALAZAR, Areli. Telephone operators CTC-Chile 1970-1998: work organization and “taylorization of speech”. Latinoamérica [online]. 2025, n.81, pp.91-112.  Epub Oct 27, 2025. ISSN 2448-6914.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cialc.24486914e.2025.81.57824.

ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the work organization processes of the female telephone operators of Compañía de Teléfonos de Chile between 1970 and 1998. As a general methodological procedure, a historical-anthropological and feminist approach was used with primary written sources and in-depth interviews with telephone operators, union leaders and managers of the CTC. The work of telephone operators was characterized by an organization of work based on the strict control of working time and bodies, the standardization of speech and the appropriation of ‘feminine’ skills, which show the mutual interaction between the subordination of the patriarchal system and the exploitation of the female labor force.

Keywords : Telephone operators; Work organization; Sexual division of labor; CTC.
