Abstract

DI PALMA, Gustavo Alberto. The Transition towards Democracy in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala since the 1980s. Latinoamérica [online]. 2024, n.79, pp.137-160.  Epub Jan 09, 2025. ISSN 2448-6914.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cialc.24486914e.2024.79.57622.

The Central American peace process, initiated with the Esquipulas Accords in the mid-1980s, induced the reconfiguration of guerrilla organizations into political parties oriented towards electoral competition. Using a historical-analytical approach, this article aims to show the difficulties of this conversion for armed groups, within the framework of exogenous and endogenous factors such as the political culture rooted in the region and the internal contradictions of this organizations. The comparative method applied allows establishing relationships and contrasts between the various guerrilla experiences and the respective efforts to adapt the old armed organizations to the new rules of the game.

Keywords : Guerrilla; Democratizing processes; Central America.
