This article presents a review of the contributions of Guillermo O'Donnell to the theory of democracy. Overview and located some of their works in the context of studies on Latin America and emphasizes in three central issues: the review that about the concept of polyarchy, their contributions to the topic of the quality of democracy and a controversy that he had with Adam Przeworski to purpose of the concepts delegative democracy and Accountability as instruments of analysis which enable differentiate the institutionalized democracies and the new democracies in Latin America.
