Abstract

IZQUIERDO Y DE LA CUEVA, Ana Luisa. Excepcional Document on Mayan Archeology Written by Lorenzo de Zavala. LiminaR [online]. 2024, vol.22, n.2, e1095.  Epub Nov 22, 2024. ISSN 2007-8900.  https://doi.org/10.29043/liminar.v21i2.1095.

Consulting documents about Mexico in the collections of the University of Texas at Austin, I found four texts by the constituent and vice president of the republic of that state, now part of the United States, Lorenzo de Zavala, on Mayan archeology, totally different from those of his pen on political and legal issues. This article describes the history of these documents from when Lorenzo de Zavala wrote them, until their arrival at the Texan repository with all the writings they left behind when they died. It starts from its initial writing as a conference that he gave in France and that was later published in Paris, promoting Mayan culture in Europe. Next, each of the paragraphs of the parent document are discussed, analyzing what the visit of his youth to the archaeological site near his birth town, Tecoh, in Yucatán was like. At the same time, an attempt is made to reveal Zavala’s conceptions about the Mayans.
