Abstract

BARTZ, R. L.  and  FEIDEN, A.. Water transparency analysis in fish farming environment through unmanned aerial vehicles. J. appl. res. technol [online]. 2023, vol.21, n.6, pp.912-920.  Epub Aug 13, 2024. ISSN 2448-6736.  https://doi.org/10.22201/icat.24486736e.2023.21.6.1998.

Since water transparency is a crucial parameter for fish development, it must be closely monitored in a farming environment. However, the water transparency of the fishponds is usually measured through an inefficient manual procedure. In this work, we propose a viable solution to automatize this procedure based on image processing techniques. Two optical sensors capable of capturing images in the NIR, R, G and B bands are connected to an embedded computer carried by a remotely piloted aircraft (RPAS), which flies over the ponds and takes pictures of a known reflective standard made of a conical target immersed in their water bodies. Herewith, the water transparency of the pounds can be estimated by analyzing those images via a specifically developed algorithm. A prototype was built to evaluate this solution in a rural area of Toledo city, PR - Brazil and took 66 pictures of the conical targets, which were used to estimate the water transparency. These results were compared with the measurements got manually with a Secchi disk, using Pearson's correlation analysis. A strong correlation (r = 0.98) between the two sets of measurements confirms that the proposed solution is effective to gather and estimate the water transparency of the fishponds, thus optimizing the fish farming management.
