Abstract

REYNOSO-GONZALEZ, Jorge José Luis  and  LEON ARIAS, Adrián de. Health Financial Protection Against Chronic Diseases. A Perspective from Households´ Finances. Rev. mex. econ. finanz [online]. 2023, vol.18, n.4, e847.  Epub May 09, 2024. ISSN 2448-6795.  https://doi.org/10.21919/remef.v18i4.847.

The objective of this study is to analyze the differential effect of Social Security (SS) and Popular Health Insurance (SP) on Health Financial Protection (HFP) for households with members suffering from chronic illnesses. Using data from ENSANUT 2018, the propensity score matching method was implemented on SS and SP affiliation to estimate their attributable effect on PFS indicators. This study shows evidence of inequality in the Mexican health system regarding PFS. Health policies are recommended to improve the benefits package of SP (now INSABI). The novelty of this study lies in the comparative analysis of health security schemes, focused on households with chronic illnesses. One of the limitations is the disappearance of SP, but the results can be used for the implementation of the new health policy. It is concluded that the SP offers an insufficient HFP, if left unaddressed, this issue poses a significant threat to the financial stability of households with chronically ill members.
