CARBAJAL LOPEZ, David. Iztaccíhuatl: From goddes to princess. Sig. his [online]. 2021, vol.23, n.46, pp.286-315. Epub 04-Out-2021. ISSN 1665-4420.
This article analyzes how the Legend of the Volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl developed, starting from three main lines: the religious footprint of tales, the representations of pre-Hispanic populations, and the genre models that characterize them. Subsequently, we examine chronicles from the 16th century, historical works and travelersʼ stories from the first half of the 19th century and press and works of literature from Porfirio Díazʼs regime, which reached their culmination in the poem “The Idyll of the Volcanoes” by José Santos Chocano, which became the version supported by the State. Through this journey it is possible to observe the secularization of the legend and the domination of macho models and representations of the pre-Hispanic past with little concern for fidelity to its historic reality.
