The aim of this article is to understand the perception of indigenous youth in the sixth semester of high school in the Yokot’an indigenous area of Villa Tamulté de las Sabanas, Centro, Tabasco, about their possibilities of accessing higher education. The theoretical reference is the phenomenology of perception, the study of which was approached from a qualitative and case study perspective, using the semi-structured interview as a collection technique.

The categories used are expectations of higher education, obstacles to pursuing higher education, and the role of the family in entering higher education. The results highlight that the opinion of the family is an element of analysis for young people before making the decision to access higher education or not. Therefore, decisions about access to this educational level not only depend on the programs implemented to reduce the low rates at this educational level, but also on the family scenario experienced by young people.
