Writing an essay requires a set of complex skills to express and support one's ideas. There is no simple recipe for organizing and presenting thoughts: this is learned through practice, and a good habit is to revise what has been written on the topic to have a point of reference. This article compiles and organizes some descriptive elements of the essay in order to characterize it. The purpose is to foster instructors' interest and consideration so that they explore the possible applications of the essay in their teaching practices.
