Resumen

RUVALCABA-BARRIOS, Juan Manuel et al. Physical and chemical properties of substrates formulated with agave bagasse and pine bark subjected to steam explosion. Biotecnia [online]. 2024, vol.26, e2389.  Epub 21-Abr-2025. ISSN 1665-1456.  https://doi.org/10.18633/biotecnia.v26.2389.

In Mexico, the tequila and sawmill industries generate large volumes of agave bagasse and pine bark, which can be processed through steam explosion, allowing them to be utilized more quickly and with greater efficiency. The objective was to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of six substrates formulated with agave bagasse and pine bark, subjected to the steam explosion technique. The evaluated substrates contained different proportions of agave bagasse (BA), pine bark (CP), perlite (P), peat (T), and vermiculite (V), resulting in six treatments under a completely randomized experimental design. Physical and chemical properties were evaluated, as well as an image analysis using scanning electron microscopy. The image analysis results demonstrated that modifying the lignocellulosic matrix improves the materials’ properties for use as a substrate. Significant statistical differences were found between treatments in all physical and chemical properties. The treatments (substrates) containing less than 75 % agave bagasse or pine bark showed better physical properties, which were reflected in a more favorable water retention curve, similar to the control treatment (70 % peat).
