In its descriptive use, the notion of dimension pertains to a spatial metaphor projected upon semantic domains chosen outside mathematics. This essay reconsiders three ways of using the notion of dimension in mathematics. It considers after that its generalized use in physical sciences and social sciences. It ends with some remarks about the use made of the notion.
