Abstract
GUTIERREZ-SANCHEZ, Héctor. Moral vote theory; a first sketch. Espiral (Guadalaj.) [online]. 2024, vol.31, n.91, pp.9-41. Epub Nov 15, 2024. ISSN 1665-0565. https://doi.org/10.32870/eees.v31i91.7311.
This paper seeks to present a new explanatory model of political preference (mainly, but not exclusively electoral). It is proposed that people will have a preference for political actors and institutions that coincide with their moral values, but it is not assumed that citizens know their own values or the determinants of their preference; instead they will only have positive or negative feelings towards several candidates or parties and many times will not legitimize such sentiments. The text begins by exposing the proposal, and then it is compared with the main schools of thought on political-electoral behavior (sociological, psychological and rational). Latter, some initial empirical evidence (from interviews and a survey) is shown, and there, the variable associated with this “moral vote” showed more statistical relation with electoral intention than the variables of the three classical political approaches.
