ALCANTARA NIEVES, Nehiby y LARROA TORRES, Rosa María. The multifunctionality of urban gardens in Mexico City. Espiral (Guadalaj.) [online]. 2022, vol.29, n.83, pp.187-229. Epub 26-Sep-2022. ISSN 1665-0565.
This article investigates the functions that urban gardens have in Mexico City two years after the start-up of the Food Sustainability System (SSA) integrated, among others, by the Law of Urban Gardens (LHU). To identify the different functions, multifunctionality was taken as a guiding concept, through this it is sought to identify the environmental, economic and socio-cultural functions of urban gardens. A qualitative study was carried out; the information was collected through open and semi-structured interviews, as well as with a review of official documents and legal instruments. Although the LHU makes visible the importance of urban gardens in terms of the aforementioned functions, there is a clear tendency for public officials to privilege the environmental ones, while for users the socio-cultural are the most relevant.
