CALONGE RIELLO, Fernando. Structures of insecurity feelings. Stances on violence and social stratification in Mexico. Espiral (Guadalaj.) [online]. 2022, vol.29, n.83, pp.149-186. Epub 26-Sep-2022. ISSN 1665-0565.
Insecurity is an intrinsic component of present societies, and it frames many daily behaviors about where to live, where to work, or with whom we relate. Such feeling of insecurity takes place in a period of rising social polarization, especially in the Latin American context. We tried to fuse both attributes by using the concept of structures of feeling, and by asking if different structures of feeling insecure are expressive of, or impinge on social stratification in Mexico. As we analyzed the National Survey on Victimization and Perception of Public Security 2018 (INEGI), four ways to relate to insecurity arouse: the clusters of confident, cautious, passive and evasive respondents. Such structures of feeling insecure appeared notably linked to different variables of socio-spatial stratification. These findings allowed to confirm that structures of feeling insecure is a promising concept to analyze the role that insecurity have in molding current social stratification.
