Resumen

TAMAYO, Sergio  y  NAVARRO, Isidro. Citizenship as Social Struggle. Desacatos [online]. 2021, n.66, pp.28-45.  Epub 02-Mayo-2025. ISSN 2448-5144.

This article depicts a critical interpretation of citizenship. From a broad, though selective, review of the specialized literature in Mexico, the link between citizenship and social movements is examined. The critique of neoliberalism is emphasized through two approaches: the first is a theoretical approach to the definition of citizenship as a social construction, based on social struggle; the second identifies some dimensions of analysis of the relationship between citizenship and social movements, which can be found in specialized readings of the second decade of the 21st century. The purpose is to document liberal citizenship as imaginary, based on a false interpretation of political equality and the role of the individual in society. In contrast, the critique to citizenship is identified, based on the experience of social struggle and collective expectations of emancipation.
