Abstract

CASTANEDA DIAZ, María del Socorro  and  BACA TAVIRA, Norma. Mexican Migrants in Italy: The Use of the Social Network Facebook and the Creation of a Virtual Ghetto. Desacatos [online]. 2020, n.64, pp.102-117.  Epub June 10, 2025. ISSN 2448-5144.  https://doi.org/10.29340/64.2350.

The use of information and communications technologies has enabled migrants from any given country to interact socially when, not more than a decade ago, their chances of being or staying in touch were nearly null, even if they now lived in the same place. Using online interviews and “netnography” techniques, this paper analyzes the case of a group of Mexican migrants in Italy who, via a Facebook page, have managed to create a “virtual ghetto” of sorts to voluntarily set themselves apart while opening a way to express their grievances and the cultural shock brought about by their changing their place of residence and the separation from their families, although, thanks to the Internet, the latter has not been as radical.

Keywords : migrants; information and communications technologies; virtual ghetto; social network; self segregation.
