LIRA, Elizabeth. Testimony: Trauma, Truth, and Reparation. Desacatos [online]. 2020, n.62, pp.18-35. Epub 27-Ene-2025. ISSN 2448-5144. https://doi.org/10.29340/62.2197.
In the processes of political transition, from dictatorships and civil wars to democratically elected governments, the testimonies of victims have been tools for denunciation and have given rise to processes of recognition and reparation, in judicial, therapeutic and social research contexts. They are also the basis for the construction of memories of individuals and communities. We describe the testimony as a therapeutic tool of traumatic political experiences in the clinical field during the military dictatorship in Chile (1973-1990). Victims’ testimonies became a cornerstone of the treatment of the past, in relation to the recognition and reparation of victims and the reconstruction of truth and collective memory in the following decades.
