Abstract

BARCENAS BARAJAS, Karina. LGBT Appropriations of Popular Religiosity. Desacatos [online]. 2019, n.61, pp.98-113.  Epub Nov 22, 2024. ISSN 2448-5144.  https://doi.org/10.29340/61.2135.

The ritual symbols and practices of popular religiosity represent a non- institutionalized space in the religious field in which several processes of appropriation and identification take place from the action frameworks and significance of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people (LGBT). In this paper, through an online and offline ethnography, I analyze the worship, iconographic and communitarian appropriations of popular religiosity articulated to a religious belief and political practice, that challenge a triple system of marginalization and stigmatization that embodies LGBT people: by sexual orientation and gender identity, religious beliefs and socioeconomic status.

Keywords : popular religiosity; sexual and gender diversity; Holy Death; religious iconography; digital ethnography.
