Abstract

CHONG VILLARREAL, Francisco  and  TORRES LOPEZ, Teresa Margarita. Pregnancy in People with HIV: Elemens of Agency and Gender Construction. Desacatos [online]. 2019, n.60, pp.150-167.  Epub Nov 12, 2024. ISSN 2448-5144.  https://doi.org/10.29340/60.2096.

This work is based on interviews conducted with people with HIV who lived or reflected the pregnancy. The objective is to explore its agency in the structural context represented by both the gender construction, and the health personnel, to consider and carry out a pregnancy or not. Agency proposes that the action of the people is developed within structures conformed by schemes and resources, adapted to respond to daily challenges. The results point to the power of the structures to condition people’s actions and their capacity to take advantage of structural margins and implement strategies where the schemes and resources are reconfigured in an innovative way. We highlight the inequity in the access to resources, depending whether the person with HIV is man or woman.

Keywords : pregnancy; HIV/AIDS; agency; gender; stigma; Chiapas.
