SILVA FORNE, Carlos y PADILLA ONATE, Sergio. Militarization and Use of Force During and After Arrest in Jail Population in Mexico. Desacatos [online]. 2019, n.60, pp.58-77. Epub 12-Nov-2024. ISSN 2448-5144. https://doi.org/10.29340/60.2090.
The participation of the armed forces in public security tasks in Mexico can generate several consequences in relation to excessive use of force. Based on the information available in the National Survey of Deprived of Freedom Population, we focused on three: higher percentages in the misuse of force during arrests; higher percentages of torture subsequent to detention, and a lower percentage of compliance with legal requirements. The results indicate that the armed forces show less respect for the principles of necessity and proportionality of the force, present higher percentages of torture and less compliance with the legal requirements of the arrest. These are descriptive results that support the hypotheses that link the processes of militarization of public security with the increase in human rights violations.
