Abstract

CANTU ESCALANTE, Jesús. Broadcasting Corporations Infringe Political Equality in Mexican Elections. Desacatos [online]. 2013, n.42, pp.79-102. ISSN 2448-5144.

This paper reviews the importance of the political equality for democracy and the impact of media systems in this equality. It analyses the results of 15 months -from april of 2011 until june of 2012- of monitoring the coverage of the presidential candidates in the two most important news programs in Mexican television, and three dailies of México City. It shows how the two broadcasting corporations favored the presidential candidate of the Coalition Compromise with Mexico, while the newspapers recreated the plurality of Mexican society, through the external pluralism, that reproduces the diversity across the media system.

Keywords : political equality; media systems; broadcasting corporations; elections; democracy.
