SIERRA MACIAS, Alejandra; GOMEZ GONZALEZ, María del Pilar  y  CIENFUEGOS MARTINEZ, Yessica Ivet. Configuration of the Meanings of Abortion in the Context of the “Pro-Life” arch in León, Guanajuato. La ventana [online]. 2025, vol.7, n.61, pp.239-268.  Epub 25-Abr-2025. ISSN 1405-9436.  https://doi.org/10.32870/lv.v7i61.7907.

Abortion is a concept that has been permeated by different social, cultural, political, economic and even religious elements. There are several pro-life movements in which rejection and resistance against this practice are raised. These groups defend their positions using biological, ethical, moral and legal components as discursive tools. The objective of this article is to understand the configuration of the meanings of abortion in the context of the pro-life march in León, Guanajuato, México which was organized by ecclesiastical institutions in the city. This qualitative study was conducted with an ethnographic approach, for this purpose, two key moments were taken as inputs: the call for the pro-life group’s march in León, Guanajuato and the march itself. The techniques of participant observation, semi-structured interviews and the compilation of images were applied. In order to understand and construct the study phenomenon, we used the technique of content analysis, both of text and images. Finally, it was possible to determine the way in which the discourses are permeated by arguments centered on Catholic morality. For example, the image of Mary is used, who is defined as a caring virgin mother and capable of sacrificing herself to meet the needs of others. It was also identified the persistence of beliefs regarding the consequences of abortion and its procedures that have already been questioned by scientific studies, for example, the correlation of emotional and psychological damage, that seem to depend on the sociocultural context of the person, and not on the procedure itself (Hernández y Maorenzic, 2010). Other elements identified were related to the manipulation of biological facts and/or the misinterpretation of legal principles. Within the discourse of the pro-life sector, it is affirmed that women are obliged to carry their pregnancies to term, even if they do not wish to do so. Within this framework, the “right to life” is applied to the life of the fetus, since abortion is condemned even in cases where the woman’s life is at risk.
