Abstract

ACOSTA-ALVARADO, Paola Andrea. Challenges of the Ombudsman’s Office in Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador. Cuest. Const. [online]. 2023, n.49, pp.37-67.  Epub June 30, 2024. ISSN 1405-9193.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iij.24484881e.2023.49.18578.

One of the main characteristics of Latin American legal systems is the special constitutional relevance of human rights. For this reason, within the institutional design of the States and in line with the recommendations of the Paris’ Principles, the vast majority have national human rights institutions. In the case of Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador, these institutions are known as the Ombudsman’s Office. This article offers an analysis of the institutional configuration of these institutions, the real scope of their work and, based on these, the challenges they still have to overcome in order to achieve their mission of being the bridge institution between the State and the citizenry, when it comes to human rights.

Keywords : National Human Rights Institutions; Ombudsman’s Office; Argentina; Colombia; Ecuador.
