Abstract

AVILA SANCHEZ, María de Jesús; JAUREGUI DIAZ, José Alfredo  and  GRANADOS ALCANTAR, José Aurelio. Study of factors underlying the aspirations of Hidalgo youth to emigrate to the United States. Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2024, vol.24, n.75, e1907.  Epub Feb 18, 2025. ISSN 2448-6183.  https://doi.org/10.22136/est20241907.

Young people from Huasca de Ocampo, Pacula, Tasquillo and Ixmiquilpan live in a rural and indigenous context. Among life options, migration is presented as an opportunity in the face of an adverse economic outlook. In the present study, we aimed to explore whether there are aspirations to emigrate and what are the factors that are associated with this expectation. The results show that there is still a high proportion of young people who aspire to emigrate. In addition, cultural gender patterns, family networks, geographic context, and ambivalent evaluation of the environment are the main factors that fuel aspirations to emigrate to the United States.

Keywords : migration; youth; aspirations; rural; indigenous.
