PAREJA-ARELLANO, Nicolás; SANDOVAL-OBANDO, Eduardo e RIQUELME-BREVIS, Hernán. Ethnicity and rurality as axes of social inequality in current Araucanía (Chile). Pap. poblac [online]. 2023, vol.29, n.118, pp.177-207. Epub 04-Fev-2025. ISSN 2448-7147. https://doi.org/10.22185/24487147.2023.118.32.
This paper analyzes inequality in the Araucanía Region through relevant socioeconomic variables for the region such as poverty, rurality, and ethnicity, among others. For this, a quantitative study was carried out based on secondary information, which was developed based on the (CASEN) National Socioeconomic Characterization Survey. The results account for the comparative disadvantages that the territory presents in relation to other regions and the country, in addition to showing a region hit by poverty and inequality, which is substantially accentuated in rural areas, and even more so in individuals belonging to the Mapuche people. The discussion focuses on the fact that poverty and conditions of social impairment in general are produced by inequality (and not the other way around), since this is not only an innocuous difference, but a consciously and intentionally generated historical detriment, which brings with it negative consequences in the subjects. The conclusion is that racism and exclusion, added to the current lack of solidarity, lead to the reproduction of unfavorable conditions for the Mapuche people, especially those who live in rural areas.
