ARROYO-ALEJANDRE, Jesús; RIOS-RAMIREZ, Álvaro Fernando  e  L ESPINOZA-JIMENEZ, Joe. The other economy in Mexico: An approach to the traditional non-modern economy in 2015 and 2020. Pap. poblac [online]. 2023, vol.29, n.118, pp.63-98.  Epub 04-Fev-2025. ISSN 2448-7147.  https://doi.org/10.22185/24487147.2023.118.28.

This paper estimates the size of the modern economy and the traditional non-modern economy (ENMT Spanish acromym), which can also be referred to as pre-capitalist and in transition to a market economy, for each municipality in Mexico for the years 2015 and 2020. Census information was used for the population employed in productive units classified in the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) and considered ad hoc by the authors as modern. The informal economy was also estimated, taking into account that the population employed in this economy is largely included in the ENMT and in few cases in the modern municipal economy. The authors argue that there is no acceptable theoretical explanatory conceptualization of the NENMT, so despite its importance, its quantification is difficult. In the case of Mexico, the authors find that more than half of the population is employed in the non-traditional modern economy, concentrated mainly in metropolitan, urban and semi-urban municipalities. For this reason, the authors establish the need for further theoretical development on the economy in question, in addition to allowing the design and implementation of regional economic policy in a “dual” economy.
