This paper analyses factors that elder farmers consider in their successor choice and in the definition of a succession plan for their agricultural land, as well as the attitudes that they manifested in this process. Drawing on the experiences of producers over 55 in the selection of their heir and in the designation of a plan, the article provides a quantitative section, where the variables related to the definition of a successor and the establishment of a succession plan are studied, and a qualitative part in which an analysis of the interviews carried out with producers is carried out. Findings show that the choosing of a successor is related to the profitability and income of the farm, as well as the existence of a list of successors. In addition, it was found that all the producers have thought or have chosen an heir, which is formal when there is a document that supports it, or not formal otherwise. Likewise, various scenarios were found in the designation of a successor, and emotional and affective factors that influence how producers carry out their succession decisions. Finally, producers have worries about inherit their assets and be helpless, which lead them to preserve and protect their succession decision as a life insurance that allows them to negotiate the necessary cares in their old age.
