Segmented labor market theory is applied in this paper using Mexican national urban surveys from a gender perspective. Two opposite economic periods are chosen in order to allow a time-comparison that demonstrates structural constancy. Empirical results sustain the theoretical proposals and show that women tend to concentrate in a reduced number of jobs, and therefore, they belong to the lowest professional projection segments with low incomes. Such situation is partly explained by the reproduction of traditional family and intra-household patterns, perpetuating a normative organizations that maintains female workers as 'second-class actives'.
