HIERNAUX, Daniel y LINDON, Alicia. Periphery: words and sense in urban studies. Pap. poblac [online]. 2004, vol.10, n.42, pp.101-123. ISSN 2448-7147.
In this paper is reviewed the term 'periphery' in the latinamerican context: how it changes as the referred phenomenon is transformed and how it includes new components in the context of the dialog between the word and the phenomenon. Being a recent term, we also examine others related words (as 'outskirt of a city' and 'suburb') reconstructing the use and sense of them and the substitution between them, until the word 'periphery' has appeared. In the first section, we are reviewing the previous words. Then, reconstructing the context in wich the word periphery starts to be used to designate the growth area of the city, and the implications regarding the sense of the words. In the following section, we analyzed the dimensions of the urban process integrated by using the word periphery to conclude the actual challenges of this particular territory and the way of naming it.
