Abstract

ARRIAGADA, Irma. Social and demographic transformations of Latin American families. Pap. poblac [online]. 2004, vol.10, n.40, pp.71-95. ISSN 2448-7147.

In this work, the effects of demographic changes -especially the decline of fertility- on structure, organization and functioning of the latin american families are analysed. Likewise, other sociocultural phenomena associated with family changes, especially, the transformation of social and labour roles of women, are examined. Finally, some topics are pointed out emerging from the analysis of the families that, in the context of belated modernity and a second demographic transition, give notice on the increase of heterogeneity and the complexity of family structures.

Keywords : family; demographic transition; family structures; second demographic transition; Latin America.
