This paper analyses the extent in which the ISO 9001, 9002 and 14001 quality and environmental management standard certifications have contributed to the prevention of work related accidents and work related illnesses. Even though the main objective of these certifications was not meant to influence in these aspects, it has reduced the risks at the work place. Our objective is to show the qualitative change in risk management at the work place produced by these international certifications in Mexico's "maquiladora" (export oriented) industries.
