Abstract

MORELOS, José B.. El comportamiento de la mortalidad infantil en las áreas metropolitanas de las ciudades de México, Guadalajara y Monterrey, 1990. Pap. poblac [online]. 2001, vol.7, n.27, pp.169-205. ISSN 2448-7147.

The purpose of this study is to examine the infant mortality differentials by mother education and the availability in the housing of the water supply and sewage disposal and the distribution of causes of death as well in the metropolitan areas of Mexico city, Guadalajara and Monterrey. The findings show the importance of the two first variables in the spatial patterns of infant mortality and the inequality on the risk of death. The illiterate mothers have the highest infant mortality rate; the same is true for the mothers living in housing without these services. Regarding the causes of death the results indicate that in the metropolitan areas the leading causes of death are, as follow: perinatal conditions, congenital malformation and the rest of causes of death, lacute respiratory infections and the diarrohoeal diseases. On the other side, the lowest percentages are accounted for the diseases preventable through inmunization. According with the structure of causes the three metropolitan areas are in the last stage of the epidemiological transition.
