Abstract

AGUILERA, Bárbara et al. Parenting Student Experiences at the University: The Case of La Araucanía, Chile. RMIE [online]. 2025, vol.30, n.105, pp.493-517.  Epub May 30, 2025. ISSN 1405-6666.

This article presents the results of a research on the experience of university students who fulfill a dual role being parents and students, in La Araucanía, Chile. A qualitative study was carried out in which eight students, selected by means of a non-probabilistic chain sampling, took part; the data were processed by means of content analysis. The main results showed both facilitating and hindering elements of the dual role experience, associated with the compatibility of activities and their effects on the quality of life and academic performance among this group of students. The most important conclusions highlight the urgency to move forward in both public and institutional policies in order to favor and ensure adequate professional training for those who fulfill this dual role.

Keywords : higher education; students’ experiences; motherhood; fatherhood; gender differences.
