The objective of this article is to characterize the academic writing of undergraduate students majoring in modern languages at Universidad de Deusto (Spain). With that aim, we compiled 96 summaries produced ad hoc by the students in four courses; we analyzed the body of work based on structure, authorial voice, and linguistic correction. We confirmed improvements in selecting the information and considering the reader; such is not the case for argumentation, however, as writers showed increasing disinterest in critical positioning, spelling, and punctuation.
