Incorporating the Internet and computers into high schools has enabled diverse uses. An analysis of practices and meanings permits an identification of the metaphorical expressions regarding the Internet. These metaphors indicate perceptions that can limit practices or explore various possibilities. For this reason, the purpose of the research presented in this article was to describe the meanings and metaphors that high school students associate with the Internet. The study was based on a sociocultural theoretical focus and carried out with qualitative, interpretative methodology. The results show that the metaphors students use most for the Internet include its serving as a repository of information or a means of entertainment with classmates, as well as a learning tool, and a connection to services and virtual groups. Practices that incorporate the Internet can generate new meanings in communities.
