Abstract

MINANA BLASCO, Carlos; TORO PEREZ, Catalina  and  MAHECHA GROOT, Ana María. Construction of the Public at School: A View of Two Experiences in Environmental Education in Colombia. RMIE [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.55, pp.1147-1171. ISSN 1405-6666.

This paper presents a conceptualization of public in relation to education and the environment. The focus is on experiences and empirical work carried out in cooperative form for several years between the RED Program at Universidad Nacional de Colombia (UNC or UNAL) and schools in Colombia. In the initial phase (one year), researchers at UNC completed a conventional ethnographic project; in the second phase (two years), teachers from the schools were involved in a series of processes of pedagogical innovation and research/action, accompanied by researchers at UNC. The research resulted in a wide diversity of practices and discourse-at times contradictory and conflicting, ranging from moral education to social mobilization-in relation to the construction of public in public schools. The comparison of various experiences showed the importance of contextual and local conditions in such practices.

Keywords : public education; environmental education; relation between school and university; Colombia.
