Abstract

GONZALEZ JIMENEZ, Rosa María. Las mujeres y su formación científica en la ciudad de México: siglo XIX y principios del XX. RMIE [online]. 2006, vol.11, n.30, pp.771-795. ISSN 1405-6666.

In this article, we analyze the scientific education women received in Mexico City in two public institutions: Secundaria para Niñas (1869-1889) and Normal de Profesoras (1890-1924). We center on content in the natural and exact sciences, describing the “scientific” arguments that the educational authorities offered to limit girls’ study of science. We also recreate the struggle initiated by Mexican feminists in the early 20th century to gain equal access to a scientific education.

Keywords : gender studies; science teaching; secondary education; normal education; history of education; Mexico.
