Abstract
GREENIDGE-MORO, Sergio; ALMAGUER-CARMENATES, Yuri and RIVERON-ZALDIVAR, Amalia B.. Morphometric study to determine morphological alignments in the Mayarí area, Cuba. Bol. Soc. Geol. Mex [online]. 2023, vol.75, n.1, e281122. Epub May 25, 2024. ISSN 1405-3322. https://doi.org/10.18268/bsgm2023v75n1a281122.
The Geomorphological Map of the Republic of Cuba at a scale of 1: 100 000, is one of the projects developed by the country to increase the degree of geological knowledge and optimize the use of natural resources and conditions. The map is made up of several topographic sheets, among them is Mayarí 5077; it has a high geological-structural complexity, which makes it necessary to deepen its morphotectonic knowledge. For this, the identification and characterization of morphoalignments is carried out, based on morphometric methods, analysis of the surface drainage network and photointerpretation. The lineaments were extracted in the Geographic Information System QGIS v3.16, these were superimposed and correlated to obtain a final Map. The number, length, orientation and density of morphoalignments were determined. As a result, 249 lineaments were identified with an average length of 1422 m, predominant orientation N 40º - 50º E and secondary N 50º - 60º E, associated with normal lateral faults, belonging to the main fracturing system in the region, the Nipe direction (NE - SW). In addition, the analysis of its density made it possible to define that the northwest slopes of the Sierra de Nipe, and the articulation zone of this mountainous group with the Sierra Cristal, constituting the areas of greatest tectonic weakness, marked by linear elements, preferably diagonal, which follow the orientation of faults and limits of morphostructures. The genesis of the relief of the study area is conditioned by tectonic structures, which have directly influenced the intensity of the exogenetic activity.
