Abstract
MANZANILLA-QUINONES, Ulises; DELGADO-VALERIO, Patricia and CARLON-ALLENDE, Teodoro. Influence of climate variability and the ENSO phenomenon on the radial growth of Pinus rzedowskii and P. martinezii in Michoacán, Mexico. Polibotánica [online]. 2026, n.61, pp.145-163. In Michoacán, few studies have analyzed hydroclimatic variability using tree rings. This study evaluated the influence of climate variability and the ENSO phenomenon on the radial growth of Pinus rzedowskii and P. martinezii in Michoacán, Mexico. Eighteen trees (45 samples) of P. rzedowskii and 12 trees (31 samples) of P. martinezii were dated. In both species, the total ring width was measured with a micrometer. Subsequently, Bootstrap correlation analyses were performed between the chronologies of each species and climatic and oceanic data (Multivariate ENSO Index, MEI). It was found that P. rzedowskii responded significantly positively to precipitation from January to March (1945-2015; r>0.28; p<0.05). The response in maximum, average, and minimum temperature was not significant (1945-2015; r<0.28; p<0.05). Similarly, the species was not affected by MEI (1972-2015; r<0.25; p<0.05). P. martinezii responded significantly positively to precipitation in January, April, June, August, and October (1953-2016; r>0.28; p<0.05). The species showed a significant negative response to the maximum temperature of the previous six months and the current 12 months (1953-2016; r=>-0.31; p<0.05), while the influence of MEI in its “El Niño” and “La Niña” phases had a dipolar effect on the growth of P. martinezii. Although both species have low dendroclimatic potential, the dichotomy found in P. rzedowskii and P. martinezii regarding their different climatic-oceanic responses would help in planning future management and conservation strategies for both species.
